Sand and Sea | Jersey has 50 miles of shoreline and 12 major beaches and has some of the largest tidal flows in the world. Care must be exercised when bathing or exploring the rocks.
From mid May to the end of September, three bays St. Ouen, St. Brelade, and Plemont are patrolled by beach lifeguards. The patrolled areas for swimming are marked with red and yellow flags. The flagged areas are moved throughout the day due to the tides and will be advised to move into the new areas if necessary. If conditions are dangerous and unsuitable for swimming, red flags will be flown. There is a also a guard at West Park but the area is not patrolled. Please ask for advice if in doubt. |

Sub Aqua | | Jersey has some of the best visibility in the British Isles and the seas around the island support a fascinating marine life. In deeper waters you will find jewel anemones, fan corals and deadmen's fingers. In summer you may even see seahorses and dolphins. Offshore there is plenty to see and explore including shipwrecks. The most visited wreck is the Schockland about a mile off Portelet Bay with depths varying between 20 and 30 metres. On the Minquiers reef a German M343 minesweeper rests in just over 30 metres of water. Bonne Nuit, Bouley Bay, Rozel Bay and St.Catherine's Breakwater are best for shore diving.
CARE: Jersey has one of the largest tidal movements in the world. Safety is paramount at all times and dive centres will give advice and provide dive tables.

Windsurfing and Surfing | | Jersey has one of the best beaches in Europe for windsurfing and surfing. Feel the force of the Atlantic rollers at St Ouen's bay on Jersey's west coast. It is a surfers' mecca all year round. Other bays include Greve de Lecq, Plemont and St. Brelade's Bay which have no restrictions from November to March. Please note however that surfing is restricted to before 1000 and after 1900 from April to October for the safety of other beach goers. The borders of the permitted surfing zones in St Ouen's Bay are marked by red and white stripes painted on to the sea wall. In the interests of safety, no surfing outside this area. Yachting and Sailing | The waters around the Channel Islands offer a fabulous cruising area for yachtsmen with St Helier the ideal base for circular and day cruises. Many French ports can be reached within a single tide. A range of skippered or bare boat charters is available, and the fleet includes yachts and motor cruisers suitable for families or large groups. Visiting yachtsmen can find attractive moorings, particularly suited to fair weather, in coves and bays on the north and south coasts, but you must complete custom and Immigration formalities at Gorey or St Helier Harbours. Jersey's new 600 berth Elizabeth Marina is situated at St Helier. Berths are available to non-residents on one, five and ten year leases. Tel: 885588.
