Liberation Day 2010 - 65 years of freedom


Singing, rocking and parading for Liberation Day

   

High Street, Guernsey The theme of the weekend of events in May is Remember and Celebrate and a mix of traditional and new events are planned.

Deputy Mike O'Hara said: "The annual celebrations are an opportunity to remember the hardships of the Occupation and the joy of liberation."

The day will also see a traditional market, cavalcade and live music.

Events Summary

 

For the 65th anniversary of Guernsey's liberation a choir of 1,200 voices has been billed as the flagship event.

1000 - Crown Pier & Albert Pier Entertainment & Activities Open (excluding musical entertainment)

1030 - Re-enactment of the Liberation of Guernsey - Havelet Bay

1100 - Royal Court Liberation Service - Town Church St. Peter Port - Preacher: Bishop of Stockport

1100 - Churches Together Interdenominational Service - St. James' Concert & Assembly Hall - Preacher: General Shaw Clifton, Salvation Army

1200 - Crown Pier & Albert Pier Musical Entertainment & Activities Open

1330 - Liberation Cavalcade leaves from Pembroke Beach

1330 - Liberation Royal Open Race pigeon release - Careening Hard

1400 - Liberation Cavalcade - Floats join at Bulwer Avenue and process into St. Peter Port over the Weighbridge Roundabout and to the Slaughterhouse

1530 - Liberation Cavalcade - Military vehicles, classic cars and large floats return to Salarie Corner to form a static display

1600 - Blessing of the Fleet - Careening Hard - Chaplain Peter Derham

1630 - Guernsey Sings - North Beach

1900 - Liberation Rock - Part 1 (3 bands) - North Beach

1000 - Fireworks
