On his journey he finds work with Alderman Fitzwarren, falls in love with the beautiful Alice, encounters the evil King Rat and sails to a far off land aboard the good ship "Waterfront Enterprise"….. Romantics in the Channel Islands Art Exhibition
Dates
04/03/2008 - 07/12/2008 ( Weekly )
Description
Romantics in the Channel Islands brings together paintings of great significance to Jersey and Guernsey which influenced a world-changing movement. The Romantic Movement flourished in the late 18th and early 19th centuries and exerts an influence on popular culture today. Nature and the environment, in all their forms – from tranquil summer days to dramatic, ranging winter storms, -- were key themes in Romantic art. In our small Islands the Romantics found unlimited inspiration in easily accessible small locations. The exhibition features works by Jerseyman John Le Capelain, Guernsey painter Peter Le Lievre and Sarah Louisa Kilpack from London. She formed an affinity with the islands, skillfully conveying natures uncontrollable forces in small oil paintings. Romantics in the Channel Islands will also pay homage to the most influential advocate of the French Romantic, Victor Hugo. The islands inspired his creativity as a writer and as an experimenter in photographic Romanticism. The Romantic painters from the 20th century and today, will be represented by the works of Frederick Sands, Bob Tilling and Nick Romeril. Romantics in the Channel Islands aims to reawaken among Channel Islanders an interest in Romanticism and the local artists who, at their peak, ranked alongside the great Romantic painters such as JMW Turner and John Constable. It also aims to engage the community in a reappraisal of the enduring appeal of the natural environment.
