| Seigneur receives OBE
1 January 2001 - In the Queen's New Year
Honours list, it was announced that the Seigneur of Sark, Michael Beaumont
had been awarded the OBE for his huge commitment and services to the
island of Sark.

Sunday boat trips approved
17Jan 01- Sark Pleas have approved the landing of
passengers on Sark on Sundays during the Summer months in order to support
the tourist industry. A 1926 Ordinance previously restricted the number of
people landing on Sark on a Sunday to just twelve. At the same sitting, a
new £1m school & Community Hall was approved thanks to a legacy of
£830,000 from
the late Joyce Betty.

| Sark to join cyberspace race
21 Feb 01 - Chief Pleas member Jonathan Brannam
not only wants Sark to bring its feudal laws into the 21st century, but
also sees many opportunities in the cyberspace world. With declining
tourism revenues, 40% of the island's income comes from financial
services. It hopes top set up an exclusive domain name and will look at
the possibility of an internet lottery and even a premium bond service. More

New taxes to be investigated
18 Apr 01 - Chief Please have asked the Financial
Review Committee to look into the possibility of three new taxes to boost
the island's coffers - residence tax, property occupier's tax & stamp
duty. The current tax system depends upon poll tax on people landing on
Sark and impot duties. Both have reduced with declining tourist numbers. |

2 May 01- The chef from Petit Champ Hotel, 20
year old Paul Brown has won the prestigious 2001 Channel Islands Chef of
the Year competition. |
Sunday boat trips commence
1 Jul 01 - Sunday boat trips started today and
will continue throughout the summer season as a way of boosting tourist
numbers. They should prove popular with Guernsey residents and short stay
visitors. The reaction amongst shop keepers is mixed with some shops
remaining closed as insufficient staff can be found to work on what has
traditionally been a quiet day on the island. |
| First female constable
11 October 2000- For the first time in Sark
history Chief Pleas have elected a woman as Constable. Vingtenier Mrs Jo
Birch took over the Constable's baton of office from retiring Constable
Peter Cole. She was sworn into office at a special sitting of the Senechal's
Court . The Constable has an
important and historic role on Sark and include upholding the laws and
keeping the peace. The Constable is also the tax collector. This
year Sark born Simon Adams was elected as Vingtenier, beginning his two
years of service to the island.Unless
something unusual occurs, he will be elected as Constable next Michaelmas. |
