| British European major investment
4 January 2001 - British European, one of the
main airlines serving the Channel Islands has announced plans to spend
£400m on new jets to replace some of their BAE 146s. The new aircraft 112
seater BAE Avro RJX-100s are
expected to cater for longer distances and may open up new destinations to
and from the Channel Islands. With category 3 ratings, they can land
'blind' at airports such as Gatwick during foggy conditions. |
Mont Orgueil Castle in need
of repair
5 January 2001 - Experts from the UK have been
advising the jersey Heritage Trust on urgent remedial work needed on the
13th century castle, or else parts of it may crumble. The Trust wish to
cover over the Tudor Great Hall but many say that this will be out of
keeping. |
| Housing Law Change
16 January 01 After a marathon debate, the States
decided to reduce with immediate effect, the residential qualification
period from 20 to 19 years. It was also resolved to reduce it down to 15
years reasonably quickly. Deputy Le Main, President of Housing believes
that the end is near for using Housing Controls to control immigration. |
Constitutional Review
16 January 01- The Clothier Review panel report
is out and recommends separating the Bailiff's current joint role of head
of judiciary and President of the States. It makes almost 50
recommendations including a cabinet style
government of 7 ministers headed by a Chief Minister & reducing the
number of Deputies. Reform is expected to take place within one year. |
| New Lt-Governor
18 Jan 01 - Air Chief Marshall Sir John Cheshire KCB.,
today takes up his new appointment as The Lieutenant Governor of Jersey
for the next five years. He retired in September as Nato's
Commander-in-Chief, Allied Forces, NW Europe. |
New Air links
19 Feb01 - VLM have announced new european air
links on Saturdays during summer 2001 between Rotterdam, Antwerp, Hanover,
Munchen-gladbach and Berlin. Some of these have been taken over from
Sabena and Lufthansa |
| Jersey win Rugby Siam cup
28 Apr 01 - Jersey held on to the prestigious
Siam Cup for the sixth consecutive year against Guernsey. In the first
half, the game was very competitive with Jersey having a slight lead. The
second half however definitely belonged to Jersey and they won 32-12. See

Budget Deficit
Apr 01- Jersey announced a surprise £12m deficit
for the year 2000. Tax collections were lower than expected and Senior
politicians have warned against what some see as uncontrolled spending. |
| Job Permits increase
26 Jun 01 The immigration dept have announced a
large increase in the number of short term of permits issued to non-EU
nationals. In 2000, these totaled 646 compared to just 157 in the previous
year. Most went to Polish nationals working in seasonal jobs, such as
hotels and growing. |
Jersey top medal table
15 Jul 01- In the IXth NatWest Island Games
and probably the most memorable so far, this year held in the Isle of Man,
Jersey came out top with an impressive medal tally. With 50 gold, 41
silver and 36 bronze, they were significantly ahead of the host island who
gained 41, 25 and 39 medals respectively. Gotland came third and Guernsey
fourth with 17 gold, 38 silver and 25 bronze.
Jersey's outstanding swimmer Natalie Bree won almost
half of the medal count with an impressive 27 golds, 10 silver and 8
bronzes.
The twenty-two competing island nations from all over
the World will be meeting again in two years time in Guernsey. |
| Cabinet style government
approved
1 October 2001- The States have approved the most
radical shake up in government structure in the past 50 years. By 31 to 21
votes, the States approved part of the Clothier Report recommendations to
introduce a council of ministers to replace the current committee system
of government. Many members expressed concern that the change could lead
to too much power being in two few hands. |
