25 Jan 01- The States have rejected a
proposal to increase the minimum residency before someone can build on the
island from 10 to 15 years. Many members were concerned that this might
restrict the current upturn in the economy. |
Petition to Queen
19 Feb01- Over 300 people so fat have signed a
petition to the Queen asking Her Majesty to over-ride a decision of the
States to sell off on a long lease, the existing old rectory in order to
raise funds to build a new one. Many feel strongly that the property
was given to the people of the island and the States have no legal right
to dispose of it. |
| Betting co. relinquishes licence
30 Mar01- One
of Alderney's three online betting companies has not renewed its annual £50,000
licence. The other two Surrey Sports International and Sportingbet.com
have both renewed. Surrey employ 40 staff and are evaluating what effect
the UK's decision to abolish betting tax will have on their business. Sportingbet remain confident and would like to see the States
approve online interactive gaming.

New air service to Cherbourg?
10 Apr 01 - Shopkkeeper Noel Hayes is hoping to
start a new daily air link to Cherbourg this June. He currently flies in
produce for his shop from France and sees this new link as vital for
Alderney. |
| Electronic Gaming Licences
18 Apr 01- The States have approved the
issue of six electronic gaming licences at a cost of £75,000 p.a. valid
for 3 years. This will enable gamblers worldwide to play games such as
roulette, poker and other casino games over the internet. Draft
legislation is being prepared. |
Sportingbet.com results
11 Jun 01- Sportingbet.com based in Alderney has
announced a massive jump in annual turnover to 31 March 01 from £27.4m to
£324.7m, following acquisitions during the year. Net loss was down from
£3.3m to £2.2m, with the company currently trading profitably. Customers
increased from 11,397 t0 90,065 in 104 countries. |
| Tourist season looking good
6 Aug 01- Alderney's tourist season is looking
better than expected, although the early months were slow due to the Foot
& Mouth epidemic in the UK. Arrivals are the same or slightly better
than 2000. Self catering is full in August and Hotels & Guesthouses
are now concentrating on bookings for Sept/Oct. |
Electronic Gaming Licences
Aug 01- The States have reported considerable
interest being expressed from companies around the World including Las
Vegas in the USA, in the six electronic gaming licences which were
approved in April at a cost each of £75,000 p.a. valid
for 3 years. This has been widely published in UK National newspapers
recently as many countries are still to change their gaming laws.
