Guernsey Swimarathon gives special swimmers a permanent lift.
Part of the proceeds from the 2001 ~ 25th Anniversary Swimarathon bought a new hoist to lift disabled swimmers in and out of the water.
' It is something we have been aiming at for a long time ' said Ruth Parsons, Chairman of the Guernsey Disabled Swimming Club.
' Before, we had to put one up and then down, but this is a permanent fixture'
The hoist was needed because of new health and safety regulations, which meant the club's helpers, many of whom are women, had to stop lifting the swimmers themselves.
It cost £13,000.00 and will be available for use from Saturday 21 September 2002 for the reopening of Beau Sejour pool.
' The Lions Club of Guernsey and Guernsey Round Table have been particularly pleased to support this venture and, in particular, in the knowledge that it will be available at Beau Sejour for anyone that requires its assistance' said Lion David Ceresa, Honorary Secretary of the Guernsey Swimarathon committee.
' It really is a project to help the community which is of course one of if not the major purpose of the two organising clubs'.
' Swimarathon remains one of the biggest and longest-running charity events on the Guernsey calendar and owes tremendous gratitude to and acknowledges the considerable support over the years from all swimmers, their sponsors, and other sponsors such as Bucktrouts who have historically provided all swimmers with free drinks over the Swimarathon weekend.
This year we are very happy to have received financial support from Barclays and for this we are most grateful. In addition thanks also go to Insurance Corporation, Point of Sale, Beau Sejour, Island FM, Guernsey Press, BBC Radio Guernsey, BBC TV, & Channel TV all of whom assist us greatly to make Guernsey Swimarathon such a success!' ' Long may this continue' said Lion Mr Ceresa.
