An update from " Scuba " the Guernsey Swimarathon
Mascot in respect of the 25th Guernsey Swimarathon.
The event organised by the Swimarathon Committee, The Lions Club of
Guernsey, and Guernsey Round Table was the second most successful on record. A
total of £48,707 was raised over the three day event. Eighteen thousand laps of
the Beau Sejour pool were swum by just under 2,000 swimmers to raise money for
the charity.
The Swimarathon was officially opened by HM Bailiff de Vic G.
Carey esq., on Friday 12th October and ran through until about
20.00hrs on Sunday 14th October 2001.
There was an official prize-giving and vin d'honeur at 17.45hrs on
Thursday 18th October 2001 at Beau Sejour Concourse in the presence of His
Excellency and Lady Foley.
A special 25th party was held on the evening of
Saturday 13th October 2001 at Beau Sejour with special appearances from guest
bands ATOMIC KITTEN and BLUE
Since its' inception the brainchild of Swimarathon President -
Harry Bisson OBE, Swimarathon has raised in excess of £778,000.
All monies raised have been evenly allocated to The Lions Club of Guernsey and
Guernsey Round Table who via their membership agree distributions to various
local charities and other worthy causes as they see fit to benefit.
The Swimarathon Committee are most grateful for the continued support of their
main sponsor ~ Barras Car Centre - Hyundai, and also to Bucktrout and
Co Ltd, Island FM, all competitors, individual sponsors, and helpers in
making Swimarathon the longest running and largest fundraising event in
Guernsey.
The event was kindly sponsored by Checkers to mark 25 years of Guernsey
Swimarathon which is the largest fund-raising event in Guernsey having raised in
excess of £750k.
The monies raised by Swimarathon are distributed by the two organising clubs
being The Lions Club of Guernsey & Guernsey Round Table & are utilized to assist
with numerous welfare projects within the Bailiwick.
Guernsey Swimarathon wishes to acknowledge & thank Checkers for the £5000.00
donation to their 25th Anniversary fund.
