proximity to St Sampsons Marina, offering a great vantage point for
spectators. Guernsey has a rich and proud history of national and
international powerboat racing and an excellent safety record. There
were two heats, one on Saturday and one on Sunday. Formula F200 was
split into three sub classes;- 1. Class 3C Race boats, mono hulls, bat
boats & catamarans; 2. Rib Formula One race prepared rigid inflatables;
3. Sports boats min 20feet & 200hp motors. The Sunday racing also
included a Basic class open to any boat or rib regardless of engine size.
The fleet of 20 visiting boats included former world champions Roy Smith
from Jersey, Dave Simpkins, Pete Little and Dave Archer plus former
European champion Bob Irwin and many of the Channel Islands top
powerboat racers.
Winner of Class IIIc on Sunday were husband and wife team Brian and
Pat Peedell from Slough in their boat 'Circle of Express'. This was
their first national victory in 12 years of powerboating and they were
overjoyed. Sea conditions on Saturday were fairly smooth but on Sunday
conditions in through Gouilot Passage and St Martin's point were quite
challenging.
There were also other organised activities for spectators including a
climbing and abseiling tower and in the afternoons, sponsored canoe
jousting. |
